At this point you have downloaded Jetbrains IntelliJ IDEA. The next step is to run the executable. This will start the automatic installer which will guide you through the whole installation process.
First of all you have to choose an installation directory. You can choose whatever directory fits the best for you.
Now you can choose between some specific installation options. Usually it is recommended to have a 64 bit launcher, because mostly all systems are running at 64 bit. If you want to be able to launch IntelliJ IDEA everywhere from the system you must include it to the PATH variable. To make this effective however you need to restart your PC. The Add “Open Folder as Project” option is very useful. This is basically a shortcut to open IntelliJ IDEA directly with the project. You should associate at least Kotlin files to IntelliJ IDEA (.kt). It is recommended to the same for Java, because often both files are working together. The last option (Download and install JBR x86) should only be checked if you’re running on a 32-bit OS that doesn’t allow running 64-bit JDK .
After you have choosen the start menu folder (not shown here) the installation starts. At the end of the installation it may be required to reboot your machine. This will happen for sure if you included the launcher in your PATH.
For the first launch of IntelliJ IDEA you will be asked to import settings. Since this is probably the first time that you use this IDEA you can choose “Do not import settings”.
Now you can choose between the 2 main UI themes. The dark theme (Dracula) and the white theme (Light). This is not a permanent choice and you can change it whenever you like. Also there are much more themes. You can find them for instance on GitHub.
After having choosen your theme you can activate specific tools. This include build tools (Ant, Maven , Gradle), version control (Git, Subversion, GitHub, Mercurial), Testing (JUnit, TestNG-J, Coverage).
Here you can enable aswell the support for Android development.
On the last step the installer gives you the possibility to install some recommended PlugIns. Especially the IDE Features Training is very good because it gives you tips and tricks for the IntelliJ IDEA.
The installation of IntelliJ IDEA is now complete. You can start now your first project.
